Valencia CF and its historic debut at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off last night at the iconic Mexican venue, where Valencia CF took part in the stadium’s inaugural tournament in 1966

The connection between Valencia CF and Mexico is a special one, built on decades of shared history. One of the most significant links dates back to 1966, when the club participated in the inaugural tournament of Mexico City's Estadio Azteca and became the first team ever to record a victory at the stadium.

That year, Valencia CF embarked on its second tour of Mexico, having previously visited the country in 1963. As part of the opening tournament at the newly built Estadio Azteca, the team faced Atlante, Necaxa and Club América.

Valencia CF earned the distinction of becoming the first side to win at the famous venue, defeating Atlante 3-0 in a match that also marked the debut of the stadium’s floodlights. The Valencian side followed up with a 3-1 victory over Necaxa before drawing 1-1 against Club América.

These matches helped strengthen the ties between Valencia, Valencia CF supporters and the Valencian community exiled in Mexico following the Spanish Civil War. They also contributed to the gradual restoration of diplomatic relations between Spain and Mexico.
